- A review of a power pack ?! Why?
-
- Well a couple of months ago I invested a little more into my computer, a
- memory expansion, plugged it in and it seemed to send my pooter mental
- wit hlots of random crashes. From what I'd read in amiga Format
- Magazine it was because the standard Commodore power packs weren't
- strong enough. After living hell for a month and a bit, it sends your
- trading to a crawl...I managed to get a £45 loan to enable a quick
- investment in a new power pack,

- About a week after ordering, Datel seem to be the ONLY suppliers at the
- moment, A big box arrived, and I mean big!!
-
- The power pack (when out of the box) is approx 22cm * 9cm * 17cm which
- is bigger than I'd ever seen before. The piccy in the Datel Electronics
- magazine adverts doesn't show how big it really is!
-
- The Goliath is simply a PC (I think it's A3000/A4000 too!) power supply
- enclosed in a nice creamy coloured metal case. The metal case has been
- put together nicley and there's no messy edges etc.
-
- It has two plug sockets for power output, as does the PC, one for the
- main pooter supply and a second to power a monitor without wasting
- another plug socket in your room.
-
- The power supply lead from the Plug socket to power pack is long, I
- suppose although not as long as my old A600 (small version) power pack.
- The major bummer is the length of the cable from the powerpack output to
- the back of my Amiga, it's so bloody short! My Goliath power pack has
- to stand on it's side so that the cable will reach from the floor. Okay
- you could put it on the desk but I have no room with all my disk boxes,
- CD-ROM, external disc drives etc, etc...
-
- The power switch is nice though, it's a simple push switch so you can
- place it on the floor and give it a good kicking to turn on/off with
- ease ... no more getting your toe on the bit of the button to turn off
- like the old power packs.
-
- However my set-up consists of...
-
- A1200 - 2Mb CHIP & 4Mb FAST
- 260 Mb HD
- Archos CD-ROM
- 2 x External Drives
- Vidi 12 Digitiser
-
- ...and they all want some power from my A1200 supply!
-
- The Goliath can happily supply MOST of the above equipment although it
- seems to be not enough for the CD-ROM powered from the Amiga monitor
- socket(12v). When ever the CD-ROM drive is plugged in the screens
- colours will be drained as I think it effects the TV modulator somehow
- and only about 4v is output from the Amiga monitor socket :-( .
-
- So to some this mother f*cker Goliath up - it's an excellent replacement
- if a little pricey - it's the only option (yes?). If you want to over
- power your Amiga then makesure ou have £45 put to one side, just in
- case!
